THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’
VOCABULARY MASTERY AND SPEAKING ABILITY AT ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION

ABSTRACT
The objective of this research is to know there is any
correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking ability at class A 4th
semester students of English Education
Study Program of Khairun University consist of 11 students. Convinient
sampling is used in this research. This research used correlation design with
quantitative approach. The data were collected by using two kinds, vocabulary
test and documentation (final speaking score) of public speaking subject were
involved. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation formula IBM SPSS (Statistical
Package for Social Study) version 19 was used to analyze the data. The data analysis
shows there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking
ability. The rxy distribution of the coefficient correlation is
0.562. It means that the correlation was in fair level. H1
(alternative hypothesis) of this research is accepted and null hypothesis (H0)
is rejected. There was no much different
between the students’ vocabulary score and student’ speaking score. In other
words, it can be concluded that students who are good in vocabulary will also
tend to be good in speaking.
